Basics Lands and Pimping

Hello all. In terms of pimping, which basic lands do you prefer or run? I'm currently rocking signed Beta, but I wouldn't mind finding another style to do. So, what do you folks do? Pictures are welcome and encouraged. :smile:

Foreign language with Beta art, or Beta versions themselves, depending on which deck its going into and how it fits the overall theme.

while the ABUR lands are classic, the artworks themselves are not particularly good in the grand scope of things (with the exception of Mountain #286 and Island #284).

I'm a huge fan of Mirage Mountains and Islands, especially Island 300 and Mountains 301 and 303—those are my go-tos in UR decks. I've still not found a swamp, forest, or plains i like better than Unhinged, despite some nice Portal Swamps—then again those are missing the "{T}, add :b: to your mana pool".

I run signed Betas and Gurus which look good with black-bordered duals (Beta and German). Artist artworked stuff I reserve in the binder. For those with white-bordered duals, I think foil Unhinged or dark Betas looks clean.

Guru and summer lands should only be used for vintage. Fully foiled modern decks need foil basics from a set you like - Kamigawa is pretty good. Generally I like P3 lands, people don't see them very often and they are relatively inexpensive.

I only play Beta basics. If I don't have enough, I'll use something like a Karakas or a Flagstones of Trokair until I can get more.

Ah, the basic land. Depends on how many you are playing as uniformity is important. It's hard to go wrong with guru for larger quantities of basics, or full art foils. Summer should be played in small doses, so I'd rather not play large quantities of summer basics. If it's only 1 basic land slot for each type, I'd look to be creative and go with the best possible land.

Let me just illustrate a bit of the thought process I went through/am going through for my island/swamp slots in storm. I collect islands, and although I have a lot of nice ones, the expensive ones and/or the ones with a wow factor are not legal for play (test prints), which leaves the most expensive legal islands to be the inverted guru ones. Those need to get matched with a swamp, and that is where the problems started, as there are no inverted guru swamps which I have seen nor heard of. Some high end misprint is possible too, but those are incredibly hard to match. I have tentatively settled on a couple of white bordered basics to match the duals, but would like to find a top tier swamp to give me more options if I want bb basics. Basic lands are TOUGH if you want to be ostentatious as the options are limited at the top end.

If I were going for larger quantities, I'd go with guru, foreign foils of my favourite land arts, APAC/Euro lands, summer, beta, in that rough order.

I've been using the exact basics from Urza's Saga and 6th Edition that I opened from packs when I was a kid, found with the rest of my cards. Every time I play one, my mind's momentarily transported to sitting on a friend's carpet and playing with decks put together from just-opened packs.

In the past I always bought the cheapest Version of Cards. One day i had little money on my mkm account and i bought some euro lands. I must say: as this mailing came, i was much more happy about the cards that jace duals or other expensive shit. The euro lands are so beautiful. At venice i have to think about the many times i was there. The schwarzwald brings me home the the danube river.

Also i am a big fan of portal lands. 1. They let me think about my beginning in magic and 2. The pictures are very beautiful. I love my sighm portal 1 plains set.

I hope wizard will print a new euro lands set. Maybe with the alps or the greek islands or the wienerwald.

I try to keep as much variety in my lands as possible for a number of personal reasons. But some of the promo art on Euro and APAC lands is just sublime, other times it's pretty underwhelming, but that's land art for you. Had a chance to get Guru lands a few years back, but thought they were too expensive, and hindsight is a bitch.

Beta Islands are hard to beat especially the dark one (usually called 285, named after the Atlanta beltway). I wonder at what point will I stop getting the same 50 cards signed by Mark Poole every year at gencon, how much is enough?

are the only two lands I care about. No matter what deck I'm playing and how many basics I have to play, if I sleeve swamp and islands I always sleeve these two. In fact I have 4 swamp with that picture and about 10 or so of the Arena foil Saga islands (all signed by Giancola :D) The art on these two is plain superior to everything else for me. Also while checking for more recently I was fairly surprised to see that their price has been increasing. Seems that I'm not the only one who likes them :D

I've heard rumours of other basic lands than Forests and Plains, but I don't consider them true. Except maybe for the Beta Mountains. They might exist. They at least should exist.

I generally use starter 1999, this is mainly because I have play sets of each type signed. How ever I have a deck that I run just one basic in and that's a signed and altered alpha island, (altered by Poole in acrylic). If I could swing it I would go completely that way or full summer.

Card went into the cornering cutter at the wrong angle (and was cut at a wrong angle), hence the way it looks. I have some other misprints of this island too.

That abu island (silhouette) up there is one of my favourites too, will share some of the nice pieces I have of that island sometime.

+1, I always loved the Onslaught basics. Personally, I use Japanese Zendikar nowadays (especially that Waterspout Island, love that art, I need some more so I can play a uniform Spiral Tide).

I really like that one and have a bunch in foil, but how I wish the actual art was foil on those.

Yeah, it's a very nice Plains, and I thought about it when I looked for some W and G lands. But the bolt... I dislike when lands (esp. basic ones) use too dramatic illustrations. I like when they are calm, when it's more about landscape than particular moment in time. That's why I can't settle on nice pre-Invasion basics. (I'm speaking of Forests and Plains mainly.)

Also, the warmer the colours, the better.

Ice Age is really fine. Sadly, the lands don't come in Japanese. Mirage has beautiful Plains, and man, there are nice Forests in Portals!

I love Alexander's Swamps from Masques. Best Swamps ever. So calm.

I have a ton of foil basics, mostly new boarder because I prefer new boarder foils (I know, heresy).

However, when I run decks that aren't mostly foil, I match my white-boarder duals with these:

Anti-pimp duals get anti-pimp basics. I love that there are one of each season for each land, but I hate that the Swamps from 5th Edition do not match the rest of these.

I currently am saving for the last 1 island from summer, as well as a summer forest. (Run 2 islands and 1 mountain currently, also summer).

I have a misscut, MMQ forest as well as a miscut MMQ island, until the last one comes... Stupid increase in money for summer-lands. Didn't expect that, a few years ago...

I run all whiteboarded lands when I can manage it. My fish deck is full revised lands. Looks nice like that.

In my elves I am a total ass hole. I run FTV Dryads by 2 and foil Avacyn Restored forests. The funny thing is, when I played at a ptq with the deck, I got no complaints (I keep them apart in the table) what I got was a bunch of people wanting to buy them...

With the way some recent cards have jumped up in price (Liliana of the Veil, Snapcaster Mage, e.d.) I am getting more and more tempted to just open boxes and sell singles like that. The amount of money that you can pull from a box is increasing too, if you can hold on to the right cards for a while. At what point will purchasing packs turn into paying money to buy more money? Should RSVP go up like we saw with Modern Masters?

My current basics are Unhinged Foils for ANT and Foil German snow covered for Modern storm. Outside of those I also really like select older arts as well. not sucha fan of Zendikar lands. Stormy Saga Island is clearly the best though. Sadly isn't foil though.

Also, I can't stand Guru lands. I you care about rarity and/or price, go with Summer. If you care about aesthetics, go with Euro/APAC or one of the many other sets with great art. Guru just seems like some bastard hybridization between the two.

Alright, I'll admit it, even as a beta/German FBB kind of guy, I found a handful of forgotten Tempest while clearing the chaff out of my collection. My old plebeian self didn't think much of them, but damn have they grown on me.

And apparently, foreign Tempest lands are hard as hell to find. And being picky about the art only helps, damn you old german/sometimeschinese-korean cards!

I really like lorwyn basics.

but for pimping, I prefer Summer, miscut non-foil, asian/european lands and Alpha/beta.

I just dislike digital art like unhinged basics or foil cards...
