Well, surfing the internet recently I stumbled upon the following site:
Beware of Magic! (http://logosresourcepages.org/Occult/magic-g.htm)
Itīs pretty fun to read how Magic is so, so evil. And remember the article is from 1995 (InterNet, lol)^^
Some quotes:

"There is such a demand for the cards that they are bought, sold, traded and even auctioned over the InterNet."
"2) The violent nature of the game "
"Many of those who play Magic cards identify mentally with the Sorcerer they choose to play. That is dangerous."
This is why you should never trust American christians :P
Hf reading!

Fixed the link. -zilla

In b4 "this is old; I've read it already and have some snarky remark."

Let's leave this open just in case someone hasn't seen the article b4.

Though, is it still allowed to flame this topic with explicit mockeries to the authors of such that amazing piece, P_R?

Ahhh, too bad :(
Guess I have to search for an even more obscure article :)

I should say a few words about Pogs (also called milk caps). I am concerned about pogs for the following reasons.

This is where I really lost it and started cackling.

I've always found it potentially amusing that the French version of Dark Ritual is "Black Mass".

LOL, I love those (can't you tell from my signature).

I remember back in grade school, our school banned Pokemon cards because of the same reasons.

Check out some retorts about Dracula (or something, I didn't bother to read much if it)

Even Jack Bauer took time to mock the guy.

(edit- actually I don't know what the hell that website is all about. I don't feel like reading today.)

That is too funny!!!! Wow, Slipknot is totally right, all hope is gone. People are so fucking ignorant ... its amusing, but at the same time, when you see first hand how serious some of them are about non-sensical bullshit that only matters to them, its really just sad.

But I particularly love all the bible verses used throughout the article, and I am convinced, if you play Magic the Gathering, you are clearly an occultist, obsessed with black magic, and are going straight to hell! Then again, hell may only be inevitable for those goobers playing Counterbalance :)

haha, i was in high school when Pokemon was big. *im old*

Anyway, on the topic: I was raised a Jehovah's Witness, I remember taking home a Ravenloft book when I was like 11 and my mom flipped out. hehe, freedom of thought be damned! In any event; I got into Magic at 12, as my mother realized JW's were nuts. I'm not worried about offending any Witness', Magic is one of those things they don't touch, so there can't be any on this forum. :D

Well, in fact I agree with most of what is written in the article, but I am too lazy to waste my time trying to articulate my thoughts in a language that is not my native on a internerd forum that could be shut down on Sunday morning.

Just this (to everyone of you, who had that good laugh): hope that you'll never be surprised how much Magic polluted your mind and soul. It's a paper heroin, indeed.

It is articles like these that really irritate the crap out of me. There are plenty of Christians who play this game. I know several of them and happen to be one myself.

I hardly doubt God cares about this game. If he did it would be more towards the addictive side of things. There are plenty of things to which one could be addicted to, maybe we should write articles about Ice Cream being of the Devil. Lord knows I love me some good Cookies N Cream!

I met a religious guy like a year ago who played. he was like 23 or 24 at the time, and his parents wouldnt let him use black cards or sorceries. but everything else was fine, so go figure. I also used to play with a hardcore catholic kid back in 1995 and he jacked a bunch of my cards. even though I dont believe in hell, I hope hell exists for him and he goes there. fuck you dan.

I was kicked out from my oratory* around 1996 for playing magic. The priests forbed us to play, but we countinued, so I received a sort of perma-ban. Fourteen years later, I'm still playing magic, but I'm no more going to mass. I guess Satan won, after all.

*Is the word correct? Maybe Sunday School is better, however, it's the place were kids go to play after mass.

Time to bust out my Tombstalkers and pray to Satan.

I knew a guy down the street whose parents wouldn't let him play for such reasons.

Yeah, combined with the horrible color shift between revised and 4th, everyone I knew was furious over the new core set; as a silent protest everyone modded their cards to be mega satanic - the sun in Wrath became a devil and stuff. Fallen Empires and Homelands didn't make matters better either.

Love how he rants about Dracula and goths on that other page tho, especially considering Vlad Dracula Tepes != Dracula the Vampire.

According to 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 we must reject thoughts that are contrary to God's word, and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

Well I sure as hell would like God's e-mail address: I've got a bone to pick with him about flooding the whole planet a few thousand years ago.

Or was it a few billion years ago...

Loosely related story... I was attending the University of Wisconsin - Madison back in the mid-90's. There was a large group of students who would get together once or twice a week to play Magic and trade, often into the wee hours of the morning. I loved it. Sometimes we met at the Ratskeller, sometimes at an IHOP, wherever. One night, some guy got mugged as he was leaving wherever it was we were hanging out that night. His entire backpack full of cards, including power, was stolen. He reported it to campus police. A couple days later, the University banned Magic on the campus. All because some kid who played Magic had the audacity to get mugged.

What I seriously want to know is who gave that jackass a PhD? Or does he just use the title because he's "studied the word of God"?

It is possible to get a PhD in Theology, and a friend of mine once told me that the course of study is a lot shorter than in most other fields.

Having a PhD doesn't mean said person is intelligent, it simply means they are knowledgeable in their specialized field. Knowledge is what you know, intelligence is the ability to manipulate that knowledge and do something meaningful with it. Shouting about the satanic and demonic nature of a harmless card game, while may make you appear knowledgeable in your religion, makes you also appear to be a complete fucking moron.

Just saying.

Yes, I'm quite aware of this. However, PhD's in Theology are predominately in philosophy departments. Concidering this person's arguments I couldn't imagine an accredited university accepting a doctorial thesis with this sort of logic. However, I do know there are some seminaries and new age religious schools which hand out "PhDs." These PhDs are not accepted by Universities or most professional organizations. So, I wonder if he makes arguments devoid of cogency only to his fellow religious fanatics, or is he some complete charleton how thinks his PhD holds water and makes himself sound like an athority when it's complete shit?

I have a deep respect for serious theologist and philosophers who defend religion with cogent arguments. It's hard defending something that has next to zero emperical evidence. On the other hand this person who entire arguments rest on players of magic taking the occult seriously, when clearly this is not the case, nor does he give evidence that they are taking it seriously. Apparently pretending something and believing it is real are the same in this persons opinion. Such a person would never make it through 5-7 years of a phil grad program.

I remember coming home one day to my dad having tossed my collection and calming explaining that it was for my own good and that he was not comfortable with the satanic themes in the game...good thing that was back when I had a beginner collection with like portal and not my current collection of legacy staples >.>

Wookies get a bad rep in things of gamesmanship, fuck Star Wars for perpetuating xenophobic stereotypes :P

There was a lot of resistance to MTG in my area for good reason when I was getting into it. For some reason my elementary school was the only one I know of to have a double murder suicide due to a D&D session in rural Ontario in the mid 80's. magic seemed like apples to apples to the community and it seemed like the game would never catch on. It did, but there was opposition.

So, today my confessor told me to quit.

It won't be easy... I gonna start by uninstalling MWS and leaving Source, but I strongly believe it would be much harder than quiting smoking was... After all, I play this game for 15 years.

Bye guys.

EDIT: It was about the time.
