View Full Version : Shandalar
I want to download this but can't find it anywhere. Well, I have but none seem to be working. Has anyone downloaded it recently? If so, where did you get it?

I do think linking Abandonware is allowed here, but I got it from Abandon Games. However, since then that site has gone down. I suggest Home of the Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?gameid=1550) (the linked game is Shandalar - however, the link is broken; I can send you the packet if you'd want me to).
Packet? Would that let me download it? I am not to knowledgable on computer stuff. That would be amazing if you could, since I tried both of those and the download didn't work on abandonware.

My challenge to anybody:
Take the second highest difficulty rating in the world game. Start off with the white deck (because it's absolutely cranfuckingtastically terrible) and get a track record of something like 2xx-0 (doesn't matter what deck you evolve to, you just need to start with one of the terrible first color choices, like white or blue). Then modify your deck at the last minute vs the evil badass at the end, and try to the most possible damage to him before the game crashes on you.
I was able to banish him for roughly 5000 years, the other time I got his life total to somewhere like -400 the game crashed for lack of memory for another spell.
Oh, and SS or it didn't happen. If I get lucky, I'll try to take him down again. But something like the 20-30th Timetwister the game just goes stupid.

Oh I always start with the white deck. The white worldmagic is the only good one and it's completely necessary if you're playing on the highest difficulty level. Playing up there means a lot of walking around, running from monsters and getting the random things that generate cards for you in the world.
Towards the end, my strategy has been to get as much gold as I can by often selling cards. Walk around and hit the random encounters and hope to get one that sells amulets. Buy as many white amulets as you can for the worldmagic. I think I had 143 last time. Anyway, this lets you basically dick around and do what you want to do without letting cities fall to monsters.
Does that uploaded patch allow player access to Serendib Efreets and stuff? What missing cards does it fill in?

I remember facing the final boss last winter break. He starts at some absurd amount of life with an absurdly large library. I'm pretty sure it's not possible to beat him fairly. I think it took me close to an hour of Timetwister + Time Walk + Regrowth + beating face with Juggernauts and Clockwork Beasts to take him down. I don't think he got past his third turn before I infinite-turned him. Great fun was had by all.

Funny, I remember beating the final boss with essentially the Weissman deck. Lots of countermagic plus Serra Angel, Mahamoti Djinn, and Control Magic beatings.

Try clicking on magic.part1 and install the file to whatever directory you want. After that, try clicking on the icons to open the MS DOS window and that will install the rest of the game. That's what I did around 3 hours ago after seeing this thread and right now I'm playing with Shandalar

I've beaten it with turn 1 Drainlife Combo, I've beaten it with Keeper, I've beaten it with Workshop Aggro, I've beaten it with mono-U fish, I've beaten it with Aspect-of-the-Wolf/Berserk.dec, I've beaten it with white weenie, I've beaten it with Nether Spirit/Bazaar. I've tried pretty much everything in the game, but I can't say I've ever actually tried Dwarven Warrion/Marsh Viper.
New Goal.
New Goal.
It's pretty lame though. Içe also beaten him with a lot of decks, however I always need to laugh when I see people in fear of those 400 life. It still only takes 10 counters to win the game.
The deck totally sucks against any other opponent though, so make sure you collect all the cards you need for the deck and switch it at the last moment. I normally include a lot of land destruction in this strategy. You already play in the colours of Ice Storm, Sinkhole and Stone Rain.
My favored way of beating him however is with a deck with Mana Flare, Candabela of Tawnos, Gauntles of Might, lots of Twiddles and Braingeyser ftw.

Kill all the other castles but the blue and or black one. Then you use the white amulet to kill attacking monsters, and take back all the captured towns you can. For the most part, you can stay ahead of one or two Wizards pretty easily.

Read the stuff those guys in town tell you. It's clues a lot of the time to the dungeons. Also, go to the places that flash on the screen for a second, they are the best spots for good stuff.
Anyway, anyone have a good spot to upload stuff? I made a patch that has some fixes (though still unstable) and has the rest of "The Dark" cards in it. I'm still hunting someone who can re-write the game to apply 6th edition rules though. I can get Mirrodin cards working if I can get that. I have them made up already.

Duels of the Planeswalkers should be similiar to Shandalar. Up to date graphics and maybe a different stupid way to let you collect the cards.
But in the end, it's just you vs the cpu, playing magic.

I don't think its possible to change the rules. But you can upload those cards anyway. having them slightly different from the original is better than not having them. Try rapishare to upload them.

My favorite deck to play against the end guy (without actually attempting to get him down to - bajillion life)
4 Black Lotus
4 Mox Sapphire
4 Sol Ring
2 Library of Alexandria
4 Island
2 Mahomati Djinn
4 Time Vault
4 Time Walk
4 Ancestral Recall
4 Timetwister
4 Counterspell
This "compact" version of my 60 card deck that raped worlds usually went infinite turn 1. If not, it was pretty much guaranteed I'd have the game by turn 2. Anybody else know of the awesome Time Vault trick? You know, the one where you only have to skip ONE turn to untap all of them? Ya, it's awesome.

There's two important tricks I haven't seen mentioned here:
The first is to use Bronze Tablet vs. the dragons. When they play a Mox, use the Tablet on it - they ALWAYS choose to switch, and presto, you have easy access to dozens of moxen.
Obviously this only really works in a control strategy. U/W with Tablets is my preferred dragonkiller (Timetwisters to draw them into their moxen). If you use Kismet, you can take their Black Lotus too. :D
Along with Mind Stealers, Elementalists and Conjurers can also duplicate cards. Because of the Tablet Trick, you should always choose to duplicate spells like Demonic Tutor, Time Walk, and ESPECIALLY Timetwister.
The second trick is that if you play with 60 or more cards in your deck, there is no 4-of maximum, so you can play decks of like 8 Black Vise, 18 Taiga, 17 Kird Ape 17 Lightning Bolt. The Kird Ape/Bolt deck (usually with some Strip Mines and Winter Orb) is probably the best for just walking around, killing d00ds since it takes the fewest clicks to win (and therefore wins 'faster' than the turn1 kill decks).
I don't even use Contracts anymore, they're just too stupidly good.
My favorite Shandalar story was: in one game against the R/W guy (Centaur Warchief?), he STP'd all my creatures, and I didn't have Braingeyser yet. I managed to get the 'Low Tide' win by repeatedly Timetwistering, letting him play out more lands and creatures, and using and re-using my lone STP to remove all his creatures so that each Twister left him with fewer and fewer cards in the mix, until I had removed like 30 cards of his deck from the game and his library was finally smaller than mine, so I could deck him.
It took awhile.

I think my most embarrasing loss was when I hadn't figured out that your mana links or whatever are directly tied to your life total, so for some reason my starting life was down to something like 9. And then some Druid killed me with Channel-Hurricane. I mean, Channel-Fireball is one thing, but Channel-Hurricane. It was pretty bad.

I just got pwned by my lack of pre-6th rules knowledge and the difference between instants and interrupts. Ancestral Recall gets a lot worse in a control deck when you can't cast it in response to a lethal Fireball in order to find a Counterspell.
Yeah, same here. Trying to tap down lands with Icy Manipulator in the upkeep step and not having that work made me mad.
I think I get this. I know how to get cards now and how to seel junk to get some more money. I keep trying to get to places that the wizards are attacking but get caught up.
So far I love playing the deck I am making. It is Sui black and I just need 2 more Sinkholes and 3 Dark Rituals to make it how I want it. Does anyone know how to get more than one Mind Twist, Black Lotus, and Mox Jet?
Nightmare
10-06-2008, 08:12 AM
Oh, the other glitch!
If you're playing against an opponent who has Mana Vault in play, make a permanent stop in their upkeep. You can double click the Vault, and it will tap and add three to their mana pool. They almost always burn for three, and then take 1 off the Vault being tapped. Then it takes forever for them to untap it. In the early game, this can be a flat-out win.

I've beaten it with turn 1 Drainlife Combo
Gah! I can never beat the end dude (on the hardest difficulty setting) with the multiple Timetwisters, lots of Loti, X spell decks. The game always either crashes on me (probably my systems fault), or I accidently go to my next main phase mana burning for a ton.
Do you do cast your x-spells incrementally? I would imagine the variable they're storing mana in eventually overflows (another possible reason for it crashing).
My favorite bug:
Moat (which is pretty good if you're going to try The Deck variations) + Elder Land Wurm (in random monsters decks). Nothing can attack.
If you're going to go for The Deck against the final guy, I suggest something like The Hive over Serra Angel, since it will eventually do far more damage a turn.

Man I love this game. I think my final deck was:
4 Mox Jet
4 Mox Sapphire
2 Mox Pearl
3 Underground Sea
4 Black Lotus
4 Sol Ring
4 Timetwister
4 Time Walk
4 Contract from Below
4 Ancestral Recall
3 Juggernaught
It almost always went turn 1 win. And since it ran very little land it got to mulligan frequently in the rare case of getting a poor hand.
Never had a problem with it crashing on the final boss and was able to beat him easily.

Dungeon clues are very useful, if you can get them without having to pay. They will usually give you the following info (not all at once, mind you):
-Location of said dungeon
-Types of creatures in said dungeons (example: small blue creatures means guys primarily from the blue group with lower life totals, etc)
-Special abilities/requirements of dungeons (no red cards, Power Struggle in Effect, etc....things that can royally hose you if you don't already know them)
-What treasures the dungeon has (most important, in my opinion, when trying to build up a deck)
EDIT: Skeggi, in the world game, you need a specific World Magic to be allowed to play the 4th card. Go hunt it down.

You're limited to 1 copy of a card for every 15ish (or so) in your deck. Since you start with 45 cards (or whatever) you can only have the 3 (someone correct me if I'm wrong, I seem to remember this being the case, but I'm not positive). If you go up to 55~60 cards you should be able to run 4 copies.

Find a Lotus hidden in a dungeon, find Mind Stealers (one of the creatures), when you beat them they'll give you a copy of a card from your deck (Nightmare mentioned this already).

Buy the Worldmagic that lets you run an extra copy of a card and the Ring worldmagic that makes the enemies have to take 5 cities instead of 3.
For Land Tax, set a permanent stop in your upkeep by right-clicking on the upkeep symbol. Then click on it to activate it.
For Sylvan Library, click on the Library in your draw step and then on the facedown card in your hand. This makes a stack where the card is drawn first, then the Library resolves. It's kind of unintuitive to get working if you don't know to do this.
My current deck is a five-color monstrosity with 4 DTs in it to get bullets and fun stuff. I run 3 Ivory Towers and I currently run a Lich in it for the awesome factor. I decked myself and lost today with it after drawing like 23 cards in a turn off Lich and Towers. With a shell of DTs, draw spells and 4 Desert Twister, you can handle just about anything and being able to be like Hmm, I'll DT up a Control Magic! is really cool too. I have ChannelBall, Serra Angel and Braingeyser in there as kills.
I suggest getting Moat from the random bazaars as soon as possible. If you really want to be sneaky, wait till you find two of the random encounter things and save the game. Reload until you get a result you want, like a bazaar or a gem merchant. Usually I don't do save scumming because it just takes too long to get anything decent. You can also get Moats from any place that trades amulets for cards. You can find these through the worldmap with one of the buttons at the top.
Roman Candle, the cards are gone forever. If you finish a dungeon and don't want to walk out, just click on the exit tile and you'll leave.
Counterspells are pretty overrated unless you're playing against Hydras, which like to Mana Flare and then X-spell you out. If you want to build a control deck, make it able to find Moat and Balance quickly and you're fine. In mine, I only run one STP, one Moat and one Control Magic alongside Balance.
Book of Rass + Ivory Tower is really, really good. Surprisingly good.
All of these deck tips matter if you want to make a fun and halfway fair deck. If you want to make Twister From Below decks, ignore it.

If you don't get all the treasures from a dungeon they don't go forever, the dungeon just moves to a different random location.

In my version the dungeons that have the epic cards will disappear for good if you leave anything in there. Weird, mine certainly stay there as I've been into 1 place about 3-4 times trying to get a card that spawned behind 3 mobs.
On the mindstealers, do they always clone cards when you win or is there some sort of condition to be met ??
Whenever I bump into them they try to pay tribute and if i fight them they give ante but no cloning.

It's either conditional, or random. I'm not really sure which it is anymore. I know that killing off the major wizards causes a majority of the weaker and mid powered mages to scurry and try tribute, but I do know a few times I've fought Mindstealers and their cloning brethren that I'd still get the option.

As far as the dudes running away from you go, they can't outrun you if you have/buy (I forget which?) the World Magic that lets you run faster (for a Red Amulet I think)? It's just not easy to control when your trying to run someone down instead of run away from them.

With the dungeon clues, you can easily metagame against the whole dungeon. For example, if you're going into a red dungeon, pack 5 BEBs. Black Dungeon, bring Exorcists and Karma.
Dealing with an Ankh in play is rough to start against, but Divine Offering helps out at least.
Be aware that in dungeons, I think your ante piles up for Contract. IIRC, this means you might lose your win conditions. Jeweled Bird is good to pack in a deck full of 1-ofs anyway.

Jewled Bird cantrips. Don't forget that. The card is a brick shithouse. I love it.

I just don't have the patience to get all those. Gimme a specific/detailed strategy that doesn't involve days of my time.
In that case run a control deck with Ivory Towers (Jaydemae Tome/Braingeyser are likely your go to draw spells). When they say "Life Loss Carries Over" they really mean "Life Totals Carry Over" (I'm pretty sure at least). Lazy coding for the win/loss(?). Even if I'm wrong you should end up with a healthy life total each game instead of being on 2 with Ankh starting in play.

Yeah, if you end the game with 100 life, it carries over.

I've been up all night playing this damn game. That's so sad, I probably shouldn't admit to that.
Stupid game, it made me stay up way later than I should have.
When I first downloaded it, I started playing at 6:30pm. Next thing I knew, it was 8:30 in the morning. The game is like crack, I swear...

Yes, the game is crack. I've literally spent 12+ hours on several occasions JUST running around in dungeons and random spawning locations (by the way, if you want to savagely cheat....or in the case of the hardest difficulty BALANCE the game a bit for you....save right before entering any dungeons, graveyards, etc. That way, you'll ALWAYS get what you want out of it).
I will say though, if you spend the time to make the greatest deck you can, you'll often go bored after about the 200th straight win. I've actually gone as far as to always have 3 different 40-60 card decks built, typically mono-blue Vault, R/G beats (savage for playing against blue and black players that are atrociously slow with their decks), and a U/W Moat control.
On rare occasions I'll rebuild mono-black sui-Vault, as I always have the cards for it. But it's almost as boring as mono-blue, and not quite as consistent.

I'm a tad miffed. Every time I win a match where they offer me a "duplicate" of any of my cards, the screen comes up for me to choose which card I want, and I can't get out of it. I can't choose a card (they just pop up so I can look at them) and there are no obvious controls. Can anyone help me?

Click on the card you want then when it pops up press Y for yes , N for no.
Esc would exit most screens without choosing.

Why the hell would you ever want to do this? The music from the game is amazing. I woudn't be surprised in the programers thought no one would ever want to turn it off, it's that good.

1. Turn off your computor's audio.
2. Insert ipod or less shitty MP3 player or PSP into speakers' 1/8'' jack.
3. Turn on said device and speakers
4. ???

I wish there was someone who knew what kind of program was used to make the files. I want to re-write it for 6th edition rules. If I knew what was originally used to make the game, I'm sure I could do it.
So far I've only got it to accept a few cards that weren't originally in the game, but it's still revised rules.

Possible yes, likely no.
Would take a time and some cards just don't work with the old rules.

Each card has to be individually coded and tested with every other possible card. It's certainly possible, but not likely very feasible.

The problem is the Revised rules. Activated Abilities and of course interrupts work completely different now. That's why I was trying to find out what kind of program I would need to open those locked files. I'm sure I could re-write it to work since it's abandonware now, but I need to know what was used to make it in the first place.
Adding cards that work under revised rules isn't too hard. Just a pain.
If I could find that program, I could even get the online function to work with it and then, look out workstation and Apprentice, there'd be another kid on the block.

If you're feeling really ambitious, I'm sure you can find the coder credits somewhere in the game file or online and email one of the programmers about it. Their email addresses probably exist on the internet and I'm sure they'd be able to tell you what program they used to do it.

Unless you really want to play the Shandalar pseudo-RPG, your efforts are probably better directed at one of the several open-source (and 6th Ed!) Magic AI programs currently being developed. You can find most of them in the slightlymagic.net forums.

I hate to necro, but I had to switch computers and lost my Shandalar files. The version I have is supposed to be able to run on Windows XP, but I get an error message "Assertion Error: D:\NewMagic\sources\sidlib\lib.c, Line-> 315 WM_CREATE CreateDIBSection" when I get to the picture and name picking part. Any ideas on how to fix this/places I can find a version that works?

Best game ever.
I remember making a deck with a few Naf's Asps, Ivory Towers, Time Twisters, Boomerangs, and Counterspells to beat the final boss on the hardest difficulty.
Naf's Asp creates an effect on the other side: The opponent has to pay 1 mana or take one damage each turn. The effect sticks around even if they take 1.

My deck was something like this
4 Black lotus
2 Mox ermald
4 Berserk
4 Giant growth
4 (the 2/1 first strike elf)
4 Llanowar elfs
4 Ernham jins
3 Force of nature
4 Ghazban Ogre
9 Forests
Not the best deck but for sure one of the fastest.
Good for killing random guys on the field!

Can anyone give me advice on getting Shandalar to run on the Vista o.s.? I've been troubleshooting all day; perhaps some different advice will help. Are there any specifications or protocols that need to be in place for this to work?
Thanks!

First step: Uninstall Vista.
Second step: Install anything else, if you want windows, use XP.

Actually, I realized I'm running on Vista too. The Manalink patches are supposed to work, but I keep getting the same error message.
EDIT: Finally got it running with a virtual machine.

I'm wondering if there is a way to put Shandalar into window mode or alt-tab. I was able to alt-tab then something changed and now I can't alt-tab out. When i do at-tab out I get teh task bar at the bottom but the game still is there but I can't get to the desktop or bring up any other programs.

They've made a lot of changes to the game. It's not as intuitive as it once was and the cards are only available outside of Shandalar game play mode (Sealed Deck, 1vs1, Gauntlet) they've also added draft and momir basic to the game. The graphics come with a graphics download and a few of the cards are buggy, but it's mostly sound and pretty good with the rules. You can use Time Vault/Voltaic key and things of that nature.

Time Vault combo worked for me in Shandalar in a slightly different way. You have to get 2 Time Vaults to stick. Then skip a turn, when you get the prompt, selecting to skip on both. You will end up skipping only one turn though, getting 2 turns out of the Vaults. It's a clickfest, but you end up with infinite turns.

I just figured out it works excellent with copy artifact and time vaults.
Does anyone got time to get me a Link for the updates that works? i'd love to test some newer cards as i normally only play gauntlet at all. (i also need the image patch then)

Oh man, my favorite deck was a 40 card concoction of 3 Atogs, a bunch of Moxen, 4 beserk, 4 timetwister, 4 Ancestral Recall, 4 city of brass. It was pretty fun to see how much damage i could deal with one atog. I think my record was somewhere around 5300, although it could have been orders of magnitude higher.
The deck I play in general is a black-blue deck where i try to end the game with my opponent having no useful permanents in play and no cards in hand. Paralyze is the shit.
I managed to kill the BBEG with a stasis deck that ran 1 black vise and 2 timetwister as kill conditions. It was the least fun experience I've had playing magic.

Dont overdo such shiengangs, cuz the game is programmed for small numbers. If you somehow get over ~10k mana/life/p/t the game crashes. Some integer problems.
