I imagine the reason behind the single elimination is that otherwise you would have a very large tournament (I think the sides had about 20+ people) starting 3 hours after the actual tournament. That would be about 5 rounds plus top 8 which is very long for a side event.

Exactly right Ewok. I typically don't want to have to wait for the side event to finish. It makes sense to set up the side event so it finishes just before the main event.
